What is Ikat? How India's Handwoven Ikat Fabric is Made

Ikat is one of India's most remarkable handloom traditions, admired for its intricate patterns and exceptional craftsmanship. Unlike printed or embroidered fabrics, Ikat designs are created by dyeing the yarn before it is woven. This centuries-old resist-dyeing technique requires extraordinary precision, making every piece unique.

Handwoven Ikat is practised across India, with renowned weaving traditions in Telangana, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Every handmade Ikat fabric reflects the skill and dedication of artisans who preserve this timeless craft.

What Makes Ikat Different?

In Ikat weaving, the yarn is carefully tied and dyed before it is placed on the loom. Once woven, the dyed yarns align to reveal beautiful geometric or floral patterns.

Since everything is done by hand, no two Ikat fabrics are ever exactly alike.

How Ikat is Made

1. Designing the Pattern

Artisans first create the pattern and calculate exactly where each section of yarn needs to resist the dye.

2. Tying the Yarn

Selected portions of the yarn are tightly wrapped with thread to prevent them from absorbing dye.

3. Dyeing

The yarn is dyed in one or multiple colours. For complex designs, artisans repeat the tying and dyeing process several times.

4. Weaving

Once the dyed yarn is ready, it is handwoven on a loom. As the warp and weft come together, the pattern gradually appears in the fabric.

Types of Ikat

  • Single Ikat — only warp or weft yarns are dyed before weaving.
  • Double Ikat — both warp and weft yarns are dyed, requiring exceptional precision.
  • Warp Ikat — patterns formed by dyed warp yarns.
  • Weft Ikat — patterns formed by dyed weft yarns.

Each technique requires exceptional planning and weaving expertise.

How to Identify Authentic Handmade Ikat

Look for:

  • Slightly blurred edges that are characteristic of true Ikat.
  • Handwoven texture.
  • Patterns created by dyed yarn rather than printed designs.
  • Small natural variations that make every piece unique.

Machine-made imitations usually have perfectly sharp printed patterns without the distinctive handwoven appearance.

Why Choose Handmade Ikat?
